About this listing
Overview Summerfest is Milwaukee's nine-day music festival on the Lake Michigan shore, certified by Guinness World Records in 1999 as the world's largest music festival, and in 2026 it put 600 performers, 176 of them making their Summerfest debut, across three Thursday-to-Saturday weekends. It fills the 75-acre Henry Maier Festival Park, which has seven permanent stages, two convertible pavilions and the 23,000-seat American Family Insurance Amphitheater. Mayor Henry W. Maier founded it in 1968 on the model of Munich's Oktoberfest, and the nonprofit Milwaukee World Festival, Inc. runs it, along with more than 20 other events on the grounds each year. On site Gates run noon to midnight, and music plays across the grounds all day. Stages carry partner names, and the park also takes in a dockside bar and lounge, a DJ series and free kayaking, each sold with a presenting partner. The amphitheater reopened in 2020 after a $51.3 million rebuild. Audience Summerfest pulls well beyond Milwaukee: 48 percent of 2026 ticket buyers came from outside Wisconsin. Others come in on admission promotions: 13 percent of 2026 attendees used one of the festival's 15 free or discounted deals, several of them tied to donations of food, diapers, books or blood. Talent and Influencers Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston have all played Summerfest. In 2026 Ed Sheeran, Post Malone and Megan Moroney sold out the amphitheater, and Garth Brooks drew 44,764 people to two amphitheater concerts just before the festival opened. Track record Attendance ran 445,611 in 2022, 555,925 in 2024, 602,231 in 2025 and 568,711 in 2026. The 2026 admission promotions collected 38,400 meals, 18,257 diapers and 67,193 wipes, 4,241 children's books, more than 7,000 hygiene and school-supply items and close to 3,000 blood donations for more than 400 nonprofit and community groups. Brand presence The festival sells category exclusivity and official status, stage and area naming, admission promotions a brand can put its name on, on-site sales, sampling and mobile marketing space, cross-promotion, digital and social, and community partnerships. In 2026 American Family Insurance was presenting sponsor and Miller Lite the official beer. Some partnerships run outside the gates: Rock On to Wellness, a free community workout Summerfest stages with Aurora Health Care, reached its sixth year in 2025.
