Overview The TCS New York City Marathon is New York Road Runners' five-borough race, run on the first Sunday of November from Staten Island over five bridges to Central Park, and in 2025 it put 59,226 finishers across the line. It is one of the World Marathon Majors, a series it joined with Boston, Chicago, London and Berlin in 2006. The first edition, in 1970, stayed inside Central Park with a $1 entry fee, and 55 of its 127 starters finished; the race went to all five boroughs in 1976 for the bicentennial. Tata Consultancy Services signed on as title sponsor in 2013, taking over from ING. On site The start is at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, and the field crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, reaches Queens over the Pulaski Bridge at halfway, takes the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan and runs up First Avenue, then crosses the Willis Avenue Bridge into the Bronx and the Madison Avenue Bridge back before coming down Fifth Avenue into Central Park to finish at Tavern on the Green. Professional men's and women's fields, wheelchair and handcycle divisions and the mass field all run the same course. Race week around it includes the marathon expo, an opening ceremony, the Dash to the Finish Line 5K and an official after-party. Audience Runners in 2025 came from 130 countries, and the average finish time was 4:32:25, so most of the field spends four and a half hours on the streets passing crowds in all five boroughs. Places are hard to get: runners come in through NYRR's drawing, its 9+1 program, charity teams or qualifying times, and more than 200,000 people applied for the 2025 drawing. Talent and Influencers In 2025 Benson Kipruto won the men's race by three hundredths of a second over Alexander Mutiso, both timed at 2:08:09, the closest finish in the race's history. Hellen Obiri won the women's race in 2:19:51, a course record by nearly two and a half minutes, and Marcel Hug took his seventh wheelchair title. Eliud Kipchoge finished 17th that year to complete his Six Star medal. Grete Waitz won the race nine times, and Geoffrey Mutai set the men's course record, 2:05:06, in 2011. By 2026 NYRR counted more than $700 million raised for charity through the race since 2006. ESPN and WABC-TV began carrying the race in 2013, and ESPN Deportes added Spanish-language coverage in 2022. Brand presence The title went to Tata Consultancy Services in 2013, and below it partners take named pieces of race week and race day. For 2026, New Balance presented the expo, Abbott the Dash to the Finish Line 5K and TAG Heuer the official countdown clock.
