Overview The National Horse Show is a two-week indoor hunter and equitation show that ends on the first Sunday in November with the ASPCA Maclay National Championship, the junior equitation final Alfred B. Maclay created in 1933, which George Morris won in 1952 and Jessica Springsteen in 2008. The show calls itself the country's oldest indoor horse show; it began in 1883 in the original Madison Square Garden. About 600 horses and 350 riders compete, and hundreds more are waitlisted each year. For 2026 it moved to the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina, after 14 years at the Alltech Arena in the Kentucky Horse Park. It is run as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. On site The program is equitation and hunters: the NHS 3'3" Equitation Championship, the NHS 3' Adult Equitation Championships, a full day of age-group equitation classes and the $75,000 Hunter Classic. The Maclay closes it in phases, a first round over fences, a test on the flat and a second round over fences, with more testing if the judges need it. Horses warm up in a separate arena and a schooling ring before they go in, and vendor booths line the corridor of the indoor arena. The show streams live and posts video through its own mobile app and website. Audience The people in the building are riders, owners, trainers and grooms, and the Maclay brings junior riders and their families from across North America: more than 170 juniors rode the 2025 final after qualifying through Maclay classes at USEF-sanctioned shows and regional championships. The show describes its exhibitors as affluent equestrians with a propensity to shop. Talent and Influencers JJ Torano won the 2025 Maclay with a score of 93.46, ahead of Parker Peacock and Madison Ramsey, and took the 1.35m grand prix the same week. Peter Wylde won the Maclay in 1982. Earlier, from 1915 through 1925, the show ran as an American military competition, and Generals John J. Pershing, Billy Mitchell and George S. Patton competed. Track record In 1915 Eleanora Sears became the first woman to ride astride at the show. It moved to the third Madison Square Garden in 1926 and stayed 40 years, went to the current Garden in 1968, then spent three years in Syracuse before Kentucky. Across its 2025 edition the show counted 18,370 livestream viewers and more than 157,000 video views on its app and website. Brand presence The show sells a title sponsor, a presenting sponsor and an endowment sponsor, and names classes and spaces for partners: the Hamel Foundation on the 3'3" Equitation Championship, Taylor Harris Insurance Services on the Adult Equitation, Chansonette Farm on the Maclay. The exhibitor lounge, the jump-in and warm-up arenas, the schooling ring, the boot shine, the riders' and grooms' water and a pizza party for the grooms are all sponsorable. Level partners get arena banners, PA reads, jumbotron spots, prize-list ads and a gift in every rider's hands, roughly 625 of them.
