About this listing
Overview The Washington International Horse Show is an indoor show jumping, hunter and equitation competition held each October at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, outside Washington, DC. It carries the FEI's top CSI5*-W rating and is the only indoor five-star World Cup qualifier in the United States. Daytime sessions are free. Ticketed evenings build to the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Washington for the President's Cup. On site Hunters, junior and amateur jumpers and ponies fill the daytime sessions from early morning. The evenings each have a theme. Opening night honors the U.S. military with a speed class and service exhibitions. On MARS Barn Night, local barns turn up in costume and international riders jump the Accumulator dressed up. World Cup Night opens with the work-off for the WIHS Equitation Final. The VIP Club is a platform built over the ring, with tables, catering all day and an open bar. The concourse has boutique shopping, food trucks and historical displays, and the Shetland Pony Steeplechase runs between classes. On Saturday morning, Kids' Day brings pony rides and a horseless horse show. Audience Riders, trainers and owners ship in for the week, and barns from Maryland, Virginia and DC fill Barn Night. The VIP Club seats business leaders, horse owners, military officers and riders. Service members, first responders and teachers get free or discounted tickets. Families come for Kids' Day and stay for the afternoon grand prix, where children get in free. Talent and Influencers The World Cup class draws riders from the top of the world rankings, and recent fields have included Kent Farrington, Ben Maher, Daniel Coyle and Laura Kraut, a two-time President's Cup winner. Earlier winners include Rodrigo Pessoa, Beezie Madden, McLain Ward and Katie Dinan. The WIHS Equitation Final brings the country's leading junior riders to one ring. Military night exhibitions have included the U.S. Army Caisson Platoon, the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team and the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. Track record The show began at the DC National Guard Armory. Jacqueline Kennedy had Tiffany make the President's Cup, the only known sporting trophy carrying the presidential seal. The North American indoor puissance record was set here. It has been a North American Riders Group Top 25 show since that list began. Recent World Cup nights have sold out, and the class airs in prime time on CBS Sports and abroad on Eurosport. Brand presence MARS Equestrian presents the show and puts its name on Barn Night. Longines is the title partner of the World Cup class, which the Maryland Sports Commission presents, and Delta Air Lines is a partner. Sponsors can present a class, division, award or evening, put a custom jump on course for designated classes, and run a 30-second spot on the arena board each night and on the live stream. They can also host clients at a VIP Club table. TAPS, the show's official military charity, raises money each time a rider clears the TAPS jump.
