About this listing
Overview Austin Psych Fest is the spring festival that members of The Black Angels started in Austin in 2008: three days of psychedelic rock, shoegaze and cumbia on two stages in the backyard of the Far Out Lounge, where in 2026 the Flaming Lips, The Black Angels and Thee Sacred Souls closed the three nights. It ran as Levitation from 2015, and in 2023 the old name came back for a separate spring festival, with Levitation carrying on in the fall. Both are put on by the Reverberation Appreciation Society, the collective and record label behind them. On site The 2023 through 2026 editions all ran at the Far Out Lounge on South Congress, under the oaks behind the club. In 2026 the gates opened at 2:30 p.m. and the music ran to midnight on Friday and Saturday and to 10 on Sunday, while visual crews including TV Eye and Mad Alchemy threw liquid light and video across the stages. Deluxe tickets add air-conditioned restrooms, a private bar and lounge seating, and Super Deluxe adds viewing decks beside and in front of the stage. The venue has no parking, so people come by rideshare to the corner of South Congress and Ralph Ablanedo or on the 801 Rapid bus. It runs rain or shine. Audience The collective's own shop sells the festival's limited-edition posters and vinyl beside the tickets, and the bag rule allows a small purse or a record tote and nothing bigger. The gates are all ages: under-18s come with a guardian, children 10 and under get in free if they wear ear protection, and only guests 21 and over can leave and come back in. Talent and Influencers Toro y Moi, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Cuco headlined the 2023 return, on a bill with Yves Tumor, Mdou Moctar, Acid Mothers Temple and The Raveonettes. Courtney Barnett, The Black Angels and Kurt Vile topped 2024, with Alvvays and Chicano Batman. In 2025 the nights went to Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, then Darkside and Kim Gordon, then Dinosaur Jr. and Yo La Tengo. In 2026 The Black Angels played their album Passover in their Saturday set, with DIIV, Ty Segall, Melody's Echo Chamber and Boogarins lower down. Track record The first edition, on March 8, 2008 at the Red Barn in north Austin, had The Black Angels, Ringo Deathstarr and Horse + Donkey on it. The festival moved around Austin venues before settling at Carson Creek Ranch on the Colorado River in 2013, and in 2015, as Levitation, it staged the 13th Floor Elevators' first performance in 45 years. Storm damage canceled the 2016 edition, and more than 20 of its shows moved into downtown venues. Brand presence Eight partners were listed on the 2026 festival page, among them Liquid Death, Montucky Cold Snacks, The Line Hotel and the public radio station KUTX. Partners activate at the Far Out Lounge itself, with product and menu items on site, messages on the festival's own channels and, at the top level, signage on the stage backdrops. The fee does not cover a partner's own design, build or sampling costs.
