About this listing
Overview The Bakersfield Marathon is Kern County's road race weekend, a marathon, half marathon, 10K and 6K that start and finish at the Kern County Museum and run through historic downtown Bakersfield, and its full marathon is a USATF-certified Boston qualifier. Runners who come back each year build a medal: from 2023 to 2026 each finish earned one piece of a Lightning Bolt medallion for the county's energy industries, awarded whole to those who ran all four. The Active Bakersfield Alliance, a local nonprofit, produces it. On site Race weekend opens on the Saturday with a Health and Wellness Expo and packet pickup, and the races go on Sunday. The course winds through Bakersfield's historic neighborhoods on a hilly loop. Corporate VIP tents line the finish, with linen-covered tables, light food, water, energy drinks and local craft beer for guests 21 and over, and the Celebration Village runs entertainment beside it. Walkers are welcome on the full marathon at 16 minutes a mile, and a Kids 1K and a quarter-mile Diaper Dash round out the weekend. Audience The race keeps count of who comes back. The Legacy Club counts those who have run every edition since the first in 2016, and anyone who registers in consecutive years collects magnetic medal pieces toward the Bolt Loyalty Award. Groups of 15 or more register together at a discount. Track record The first race, in 2016, drew more than 1,600 registrants from more than 20 states and three continents, and registration reached nearly 3,000 by 2019. After a pause the race returned in 2022 on the current course. Marathon finishers: 171, 178, 205, 337, 464 from 2022 to 2026. The alliance has given more than $23,000 to youth causes, including CSU Bakersfield's Roadrunner Scholarship Fund. Brand presence The title sponsor's name goes on the race, the start and finish arch, the shirts, the bibs and the medallion ribbons. Below it sit a half marathon presenting sponsor, three specialized presenting positions - the expo, traffic and safety along the course, and hydration, which names all 13 aid stations - and platinum to bronze partners with expo booths and finish-line space. The alliance says it is open to custom sponsorships and in-kind support.
