About this listing
Overview Bull City Race Fest is Durham's fall road race: a half marathon, a 5K and the Delta Air Lines Team Challenge, run on one Sunday morning in October. Capstone Races, which also runs the Myrtle Beach Marathon, produces it. Both courses start and finish at Diamond View Park on the American Tobacco Campus, the restored tobacco warehouse district next to the Durham Bulls ballpark, and the course takes runners past Duke University and through the historic neighborhoods around downtown. On site Packet pickup runs the day before at American Tobacco Campus. On race morning the half marathon goes off first, with a separate wheelchair and handcycle start a few minutes ahead, and the 5K follows fifteen minutes later. Both courses are USATF certified, with water and sports drink at every aid station. Runners finish into a post-race party on the green beside the finish line, with a stage for the awards, a beer garden for runners 21 and over, food vendors, a sponsor zone, team tents for the Team Challenge and a VIP area. Every finisher gets a race shirt and a distance medal, and age-group awards are handed out on the day. Audience The field is split almost evenly, 51.9% women and 47.7% men, and runners in their twenties and thirties make up about 60% of it. Just over a third live in Durham; most of the rest come from Raleigh, Chapel Hill and elsewhere in North Carolina. Organizers count more than 5,500 runners and spectators on race morning. Talent and Influencers There is no paid elite field. The race is built for everyday runners, from first-time 5K finishers to Triangle run clubs chasing a fall half marathon. The Delta Air Lines Team Challenge lets friends, co-workers and run clubs enter as a team in either distance and compete for trophies, and 32 teams took part at the most recent race. Runners who also finish the Tar Heel 10 Miler and City of Oaks Marathon earn a Triangle Triple medal, which ties the race into Capstone's wider Triangle calendar. Track record The race has run in downtown Durham for more than a decade, and registration has climbed in each of the last several years. The most recent race drew about 3,200 runners across the two distances, and organizers expect 4,000 or more participants at the next one. Runners rated it 4.61 out of 5 for overall satisfaction and gave it a Net Promoter Score of 62, and registered runners open about three of every four race emails. Brand presence Delta Air Lines names the Team Challenge and hosts the VIP zone. Duke Cancer Institute is the charity beneficiary, and First Horizon Bank, Fleet Feet, Press Coffee Crepes Cocktails and WRAL are official sponsors, alongside partners such as Deloitte, Playa Bowls, Upright Athlete, ZenBusiness and The Junkluggers. Partners can brand the start and finish, the course and race shirts, take a tent in the sponsor zone, sample at packet pickup and the finish, and reach runners through race emails, the website and social posts.
