Overview The Charlottesville Fall Classic is a half marathon and 10K that start and finish on the Historic Downtown Mall, then wind through some of the oldest neighborhoods in town and the historic Woolen Mills to about five flat miles on the paths along the Rivanna River, timed for October color. It was established in 2002, and Best Things Virginia has listed it among the best road races in Virginia. Bad to the Bone Sports, a race production company putting on events since 2001, runs it alongside the Charlottesville Marathon, the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon, the UROC 100K and the Bel Monte 50 Miler. On site Both races start at 7 a.m. from the east end of the Downtown Mall, in front of the Ting Pavilion, and finish in the same spot. The course is hilly apart from the river stretch and runs open to traffic. The two routes split at mile 4.1; a half marathoner who reaches that point more than 1 hour and 6 minutes after the start is moved onto the 10K. Water, Gatorade and gels sit at miles 2.5, 3.5, 5.7, 7.7, 9.8 and 11.5, and the half closes after three and a half hours, about a 16-minute mile. Packet pickup runs the day before at Appalachian Running Company and again at the start on race morning. Awards go out at the finish, 8:30 a.m. for the 10K and 9:30 for the half. Audience The race publishes its own training plan, written for beginners and experienced runners alike, and awards the top three in every age group from 19 and under to 70 and over. Brand presence Greenlayer, the race's shirt partner, supplies technical shirts in men's and women's cuts. The start and finish share one spot on the Downtown Mall, where the awards ceremonies are held, and the race sells a title position and a Jefferson level.
