About this listing
Overview DOC NYC is New York's documentary festival, and the largest in the country. IFC Center, the Greenwich Village art house owned by AMC Networks, produces it. It runs every November. For nine days the festival fills downtown Manhattan screens with premieres, parties and an industry conference, and once the theaters go dark the program keeps streaming to viewers across the country for ten more days. Variety calls it America's most influential documentary festival. On site Films play at IFC Center on Sixth Avenue, SVA Theatre in Chelsea, Village East by Angelika and The New School. Pass holders get daily breakfasts and happy hours in the Festival Lounge at Bar Veloce. Opening Night, the Filmmaker Party and the Awards Ceremony carry the social calendar. The week opens at Gotham Hall with the Visionaries Tribute luncheon, a room full of distributors, producers and Academy members. DOC NYC PRO is the industry side. Partners host lounges, panels and product demos, and sponsor trailers run before films. Audience Educated New Yorkers who follow nonfiction closely sit beside the filmmakers, streamers, critics and Academy voters who shape awards season. The festival counts 30,000 ticket buyers and 85,000 email readers. Free screenings bring city public school students into the theaters. Talent and Influencers Most screenings end with the filmmakers on stage. Past guests include Hillary Clinton, Katie Couric, Werner Herzog, Martin Scorsese, Emma Watson, Jim Carrey, Eric Clapton, David Byrne, Idina Menzel, Dionne Warwick, Olivia Wilde and Questlove. Visionaries Tribute honorees have included Alex Gibney, Michael Moore and Wim Wenders. The 40 Under 40 list and the Documentary New Leaders program spotlight rising talent. Track record DOC NYC has screened the eventual Best Documentary Feature Oscar winner in ten of the last eleven years. Its Short List section reliably previews the Academy's nominees. The festival qualifies short films for the Oscars, and more than 120 outlets cover it, from The New York Times to IndieWire. Between festivals, DOC NYC Selects brings premieres and filmmaker talks to IFC Center all year. Brand presence Apple Original Films, HBO Documentary Films, Netflix, National Geographic Documentary Films, ESPN Films, Amazon MGM Studios and Audio-Technica back the festival. The media partners are Thirteen/WNET, Variety, IndieWire and WNYC. Citibank, Lexus, Heineken, Stoli, illy, FujiFilm and Sony have partnered before. Tiers climb from Event Sponsor to Presenting Lead Sponsor, whose name rides on every mention of DOC NYC. Top partners can extend into year-round programs at IFC Center.
