Overview The East Coast Open is the 20-goal championship of Greenwich Polo Club in Connecticut and the only high-goal polo tournament played on the East Coast in summer. Teams meet over three Sundays at the end of the season, and it closes the club's summer run of East Coast cups. Greenwich Polo Club sits about an hour north of New York City, and the tournament also forms one leg of the United States Polo Association's national platform with the U.S. Open Polo Championship in Wellington and the Silver Cup in Santa Barbara. On site Spectators watch from reserved pavilion boxes, from tables under white umbrellas along the fieldside fence and from tailgate spots on the lawn inside the picket fence. At halftime the crowd walks out to stomp divots back into the field. The final ends with the trophy presentation, the MVP and Best Playing Pony awards, and charity donations made on behalf of both finalists to equine rescue groups. Audience Sunday crowds at Greenwich drive in from New York City and from Fairfield and Westchester counties. The club draws families, members of the local equestrian community and hospitality guests who book boxes and fieldside tables for the whole afternoon. Summer Sundays at the club have played to sold-out crowds. Talent and Influencers Mariano Aguerre, Facundo Pieres, Hilario Ulloa and Nacho Figueras have all played at Greenwich. The club is home to White Birch, founder Peter Brant's team, which once won the East Coast Open five years running. A recent final went to IGEA over FlyHouse on a golden goal from Raul "Gringo" Colombres, with Cristian "Magoo" Laprida named MVP. Teams for the next edition have not been announced. Track record The tournament began at Myopia Polo Club in Hamilton, Massachusetts, where it was played for the Perry Trophy, and stayed there for a quarter century before moving to Greenwich. White Birch has won it more than any other side, and a team carrying the Audi name has lifted the trophy twice. Greenwich Polo Club itself dates to the early eighties and is counted among the leading high-goal venues in the world. Brand presence Audi is the presenting sponsor of the East Coast Open and the club's official vehicle. Interactive Brokers presents the East Coast Gold Cup. U.S. Polo Assn. is the club's official apparel brand; at the final it handed out commemorative hats for the divot stomp and poured its own signature cocktail. Mohegan Sun, Visit Barbados and Hospital for Special Surgery are official sponsors, with UBS, U.S. Bank Private Wealth Management and FlyHouse among the associate sponsors.
