About this listing
Overview The Legendary Art Car Ball is the night-time party of Houston Art Car Parade Weekend, produced by the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, the nonprofit behind the parade. It runs on the Friday night before the parade, from early evening until late, with live bands, performance art and hundreds of lit-up and fire-breathing art cars parked across the grounds. Guests come in costume. Admission is ticketed, and the money goes back into the Orange Show's year-round programs. On site Recent Balls have filled Hermann Square in front of Houston City Hall and the Orange Show World Headquarters campus in the East End. Headliners play a tented main stage while fire dancers, flow artists and roaming performers work the crowd, and interactive installations sit between the cars. Art car builders stand beside their work to talk about it. Food, beer and drinks are sold by ticket. Partners can brand the performance stage, the serving areas and the parking. Audience Houston's arts, music and maker crowd, dressed up for the night: artists, art car builders, young professionals and longtime Orange Show supporters. The wider parade audience mirrors Houston, with Hispanic, white, Black and Asian residents all well represented and most households in the middle income bands. Talent and Influencers The stage leans on New Orleans and Gulf Coast roots music. Bo Dollis Jr. and the Wild Magnolias headlined the most recent Ball, with Step Rideau and the Zydeco Outlaws, blues guitarist Shawn Allen and a DJ set by Orange Show artists-in-residence Poncili Creación played from a custom art car. Earlier lineups featured Kam Franklin, Brittany Davis and Free Rads, alongside performance troupes such as the Renegade Carnies and Moon Papas. Track record The Ball has opened parade weekend for decades and bills itself as the night where Mardi Gras meets Burning Man. The parade it kicks off is Houston's largest free public event, drawing more than 300,000 spectators and over 250 art cars. Brand presence Team Gillman presents the full parade weekend, and H-E-B, Saint Arnold Brewing, Silver Eagle Distributors and ABC13 back the wider festival. At the Ball, a presenting partner takes naming rights, stage partners are recognized on the performance stage, and food, beverage and parking partners are signed in the serving and parking areas. Every tier comes with a block of Ball tickets.
