About this listing
Overview LEVITATION is the Austin psych-rock festival started by members of The Black Angels, the bill that brought the 13th Floor Elevators back in 2015 for their first performance in 45 years. It takes over Austin for several days each fall. The Reverberation Appreciation Society produces it: Rob Fitzpatrick, Oswald James and the Black Angels' Christian Bland and Alex Maas, who also run a record label of the same name. It ran as Austin Psych Fest until late 2014, when it took its new name from an Elevators song, and LEVITATION editions have also run in France, Vancouver, Chicago and Brazil. On site Venues change year to year. The festival came back at The Far Out Lounge in South Austin in 2022 after five years off, and revived Austin Psych Fest there in 2023 as a single-site, three-day event. In 2025 the main festival moved to the Palmer Events Center from Friday to Sunday, with late-night shows in clubs across the city and a first day given over to metal. The 2026 edition ran four days, Thursday to Sunday, in rooms including Stubb's, Mohawk, Elysium, Hotel Vegas and the 13th Floor. Talent and Influencers The first Austin Psych Fest, on March 8, 2008 at The Red Barn in north Austin, was The Black Angels, Ringo Deathstarr and Horse and Donkey. In 2022 Kikagaku Moyo played the Far Out Lounge on their last tour of the United States. The 2025 edition opened with Castle Rat and closed its metal day with Mastodon, and Pavement closed the weekend. In 2026 Bikini Kill headlined the Friday and American Football the Thursday at Stubb's, on a bill with Molchat Doma, Peter Hook and The Light, Nitzer Ebb and Arlo Parks. Track record The 2013 edition was the first held fully outdoors, at Carson Creek Ranch, with three stages and camping. It also started a poster series by American and international artists. In 2016 severe weather damaged the Carson Creek grounds and the festival was canceled; more than 20 concerts went up in downtown Austin to carry the lineup and its ticket holders instead. None ran from 2017 to 2021. Brand presence Fifteen partners appeared on the festival's 2026 pages, among them Marshall, Liquid Death, the Austin Live Music Fund, the Austin station KUTX and The Line Hotel. Sponsorship is sold at title, platinum, gold and bronze levels, and fees cover the placement only: custom design, builds and product sampling are costed separately.
