Overview Lightning in a Bottle is a five-day camping festival on the shore of Buena Vista Lake in California's Central Valley, where the crowd sleeps on site and seven stages and worlds run at once, from the Lightning and Thunder main stages to The Compass, a learning hub that books more than 150 talks and workshops. Woogie, The Stacks, Junkyard and Grand Artique fill out the site. Do LaB, the art and production collective of Dream Rockwell and Josh and Jesse Flemming, produces it over Memorial Day weekend. On site Five-day passes get in from Wednesday at noon, when The Stacks and Junkyard throw the kick-off parties. Woogie opens Thursday with a full night of music, and the main stages run Friday to Sunday. Camping is included with GA and VIP passes and is tent-only, and the Atlaswyld campground adds luxury tents and Airstreams. The Compass holds six programmed areas, among them the Learning Kitchen for food workshops and ArtClave for art classes and tours. More than 50 live painters work blank canvases through the weekend for Lightning in a Paintcan, which closes with an art walk and silent auction on Sunday evening. Every vendor takes payment on an RFID wristband, and water refill stations are free. Audience The festival calls itself a community of artists, vendors, performers, musicians, teachers, thought leaders and volunteers. People stay for the run: gates close each night and anyone who leaves cannot get back in until morning. Coolers and alcohol stay in the campgrounds, and the festival grounds take backpacks, cameras and refillable bottles. Waste is pack-it-in, pack-it-out, sorted at recycling and compost stations. It is all ages, with under-18s accompanied by a parent or guardian. Talent and Influencers Skrillex, James Blake and Rufus Du Sol headlined in 2024. Khruangbin, Jamie xx, Four Tet and John Summit topped the 2025 bill, and Empire of the Sun, Mau P and Sara Landry the 2026 one. Alongside the music, The Compass books speakers and teachers, and yoga and movement sessions run every day. Track record It began in 2001 as a private birthday party and went public in 2004 at Gold Creek Ranch in the Angeles National Forest, then moved through Santa Barbara, Silverado, Lake Skinner and the San Antonio Reservoir before settling at Buena Vista in 2019. It did not run in 2020 or 2021 and came back in 2022. A Greener Festival gave it an Outstanding award every year from 2011 to 2014. Brand presence The festival's 2027 partner page thanked 37 brands. Outside alcohol is not allowed on the festival grounds, and every bar and vendor inside the gates runs on the same RFID wristband.
