About this listing
Overview The Maine Lobster Festival is five days of lobster on the harbor in Rockland, Maine, cooked in what the festival calls the World's Largest Lobster Cooker: eight steel-mesh units that steam 1,600 pounds of lobster in 15 minutes. It runs Wednesday to Sunday over the first weekend in August in Harbor Park, admission to the grounds was free for the 79th festival in 2026, and more than 1,300 unpaid volunteers run it. The festival is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit. On site Lobster goes from the cooker in 100-pound batches straight to the Main Eating Tent, which in 2026 had its own musician from noon to 6 p.m. The Main Stage runs all five days; the 2026 bill included Maia Sharp, Alice Howe and Freebo, and the Rocky Coast String Band. Steins and Vines is a ticketed tasting of Maine-made beer, wine and spirits. Around them run an amateur seafood cooking contest, a Marine Tent, arts and crafts vendors, children's events, a road race and, from 2026, a dog show. On Sunday the International Great Crate Race strings 50 wooden lobster crates across Rockland's inner harbor, and runners go back and forth across them until they fall in. Audience The festival's own history counts guests from across the country, Hawaii included, and from 79 countries, from Algeria to Zimbabwe. On Saturday morning the Big Parade runs about a mile down North Main and up Main Street for an hour and a half to two hours, with King Neptune and his court, fire trucks, marching bands and business floats, and it has drawn the largest crowd of the weekend for many years. The crate race pulls hundreds of spectators to the harbor edge. Track record A group of residents and summer people started it in March 1947 as the Camden-Rockport Lobster Festival, and it moved to Rockland in 1948. That year Ruth Roberts was crowned the first Miss Maine Seafoods; the title became Maine Sea Goddess and, in 2023, Maine Lobster Festival Delegate, open to anyone 16 to 22. The current cooker debuted in 2008, partly paid for by engraved bricks, and the festival's peak year served more than 26,000 pounds of lobster. In 2014 two young runners set the crate race record at 6,500 crates without falling in. By its own count the festival gave more than $850,000 over a decade to local nonprofits, schools, scholarships, first responders and city projects, its largest single gift a utility truck for the Thomaston Fire Department. Brand presence The festival lists its sponsors in three tiers. For 2026 the top tier included Ford, CedarWorks, Casella and INEOS Grenadier alongside Maine radio stations and the Bangor Daily News. Sponsors get PA announcements across the grounds, custom banners in high-traffic spots, mentions on the festival's Instagram and Facebook, and a logo and link on its sponsor page.
