About this listing

Overview Miami Carnival is South Florida's Caribbean carnival, produced every Columbus Day weekend by the nonprofit Miami Broward One Carnival Host Committee. The season now runs across two weekends in Broward County and peaks with a parade of costumed mas bands, soca and steelpan, followed by a concert with Caribbean headliners. Tens of thousands come from across the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and the islands, and many plan their whole trip around it. On site Junior Carnival and Pan Jamboree open the season with a free family day in Tamarac, and Red Road Fete kicks off the holiday weekend. Saturday is the Official J'ouvert, a dawn paint-and-powder road party. Sunday is Carnival Day at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium: the Parade of Bands, a concert, a Caribbean Food Village and a VIP hospitality garden. Sponsors can take title or presenting rights, run a pavilion or 10x10 booth, hang banners at each venue, speak from the main stage, advertise in the Miami Carnival Zine and on the broadcast, or underwrite Junior Carnival, Pan Night or the food court. Audience The GMCVB's patron survey shows a crowd that is about 70% women, mostly Caribbean-American with Trinidadian and Jamaican roots, and largely 21 to 54. Most hold a degree, a quarter earn over $105,000, and visitors stay a median of four nights. Broward and Miami-Dade locals mix with travelers from New York, Orlando, Chicago and Atlanta. Talent and Influencers Carnival Day closes with a concert of international soca and Caribbean acts. Machel Montano has appeared, and J'ouvert has featured Iwer George, Skinny Banton and Tallpree. The mas bands draw their own following, with designers, bandleaders and King and Queen costumes competing for Band of the Year, and Caribbean media such as South Florida Caribbean News, Caribbean National Weekly, Trini Jungle Juice and Road Block Radio cover the season from launch to parade. Track record Caribbean immigrants started the carnival on the Sunday before Columbus Day, and it has grown into one of the largest Caribbean carnivals in North America. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau hosts the parade and studies its visitor impact, Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs supports it, and the Cities of Lauderhill and Tamarac power events on the ground. Coverage has reached Forbes, Billboard, Essence, NBC and USA Today. Brand presence Visit Lauderdale presents Carnival Day and hosts J'ouvert, and TD Bank presents Junior Carnival. Monster, Flow, Ding, Potieri Cocktail, the Florida Department of Health, Miami-Dade County and the GMCVB are sponsors, with Voice of the Caribbean, WACK Radio and Jamaicans.com among the media partners. Guinness, Red Stripe and Duke and Dame Whisky have sponsored in the past.
