Overview MoonPie Over Mobile is downtown Mobile's free New Year's Eve street party, and at midnight a 12-foot, 600-pound lighted MoonPie drops 317 feet in 60 seconds from the 34th floor of the RSA Trustmark building. The pie is a nod to Mardi Gras: Mobile's parades first threw MoonPies from their floats in 1952, and the snack became the city's favorite throw. The day runs from a noon drop for children to a headliner on the main stage by Bienville Square, then the countdown, fireworks and a laser show. Admission costs nothing; VIP experiences are sold on top. On site The Kids Zone opens in Mardi Gras Park in the late morning with bounce houses, New Year's crafts, MoonPie treats and a second line march, and a Noon Year's Eve drop for children. DJs hold the main stage from 6:30 in the evening. In the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel courtyard, a brass band plays through the Best Decorated Umbrella contest and the cutting of the world's largest edible MoonPie, then leads a second line parade through downtown to the main stage, with the mayor and city officials at the front and the public falling in behind. The stage sits on St. Francis Street with a giant video screen. Fireworks go up from the top of the RSA Trustmark building and from a barge on the waterfront. Drinks bought in the entertainment district can go out onto the street. Audience The day splits in two: families come for the midday Kids Zone and noon drop, and the main-stage crowd builds through the evening to the countdown. There is no age limit. The celebration fills hundreds of hotel rooms in what the organizers call a formerly slow week, and people write their hopes for the year on the Resolution Wall, which the event says is one of its most photographed spots. Talent and Influencers Headliners change genre from year to year. The night that rang in 2024 marked 50 years of hip hop with Slick Rick, Rob Base, Big Daddy Kane, Dana Dane and Yo-Yo. Clint Black headlined the next New Year's Eve, and Morris Day and the Time closed 2025, after Red and The Revelers. CeeLo Green was named to headline the night ringing in 2027. The Jukebox Brass Band, local second line players, opens the main stage and leads the parade. Track record Former city councilman Fred Richardson started the celebration on December 31, 2008. In its 2021 sponsorship deck the event put its earned media at more than $3 million a year across TV, radio, print and digital. Brand presence The night is sold in four named pieces. The main stage sponsor's logo sits on the stage header, and the sponsor helps announce the talent at the news conference. The fireworks sponsor's name goes on the show itself; in 2021 it was billed as the Spire Fireworks Show. The second line parade sponsor gets a custom banner at the head of the parade, and the Resolution Wall sponsor's logo goes on the wall and the stickers people write on. Every level includes a VIP reception in the Presidential Suite of the Battle House Hotel, a logo projected onto the RSA Trustmark building and worked into the laser show, and a meet and greet with the headliners when the talent contract allows.
