Overview The North Carolina Folk Festival is a free three-day music festival on the streets of downtown Greensboro that books well past folk: The Roots featuring Questlove and Molly Tuttle headlined in 2026, and George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Mavis Staples and Grandmaster Flash have all played it. It runs in September across five stages, with more than 40 artists from over 20 genres plus dance, food and art. An independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit produces it, and it costs about $1.5 million a year to put on for free. The 2025 festival was its 11th. On site The main stages are CityStage, Depot, Summit and LeBauer Park, with a Jams stage expanded for 2026, and in 2026 two auxiliary stages carried the count past 50 performances. Between them sit the NC Makers Marketplace, a Folklife area, a family area, VIP areas, artist merch tents at each stage, a Ferris wheel, a welcome arch at CityStage, misting tents and a public graffiti wall. Side programs spill into the rest of downtown: Ethno USA played the Carolina Theatre in 2026, ReString Appalachia ran an instrument drive, and the Matty Sheets Memorial Open Mic reached its third year. The 2026 festival added a Sunday morning symphony performance and a concert in a new downtown venue, and Road to the Fest concerts take it to western North Carolina and Wilmington. Audience More than half the crowd, 54% by the festival's count, comes from outside the Triad. The testimonials the festival collects run the same way: a Greensboro mother whose daughter flew in from a job in New York to see Sammy Rae for free, a Wilmington visitor planning to come back with more friends, and a family who were not into folk and came all three days, with and without the kids. Talent and Influencers St. Paul and the Broken Bones opened the 2026 festival on Friday after Madison Cunningham, The Roots featuring Questlove took Saturday and Molly Tuttle closed Sunday. The same bill carried Medicine Singers with Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo and Yonatan Gat, guitarist Yasmin Williams, Morocco's Samir Langus and the Afro-Cuban jazz group OKAN. Earlier years brought Rhiannon Giddens, The War and Treaty, Arrested Development, Los Lonely Boys, Sammy Rae and the Friends and Steep Canyon Rangers. Track record The festival marked its 10th anniversary in 2024. The Southeast Tourism Society named it a Signature Event of the Southeast in 2025, and Guide to NC named it the 2026 Best of North Carolina Festivals winner. It puts its annual economic impact at $20 million, and more than 675 volunteers fill 1,100 shifts over the weekend. Brand presence A stage sponsor's name goes on the stage itself: the large banner over the stage or tent, the banner on its side, and every directional sign and map in the festival. Below the stages, almost every piece of the weekend takes a name, from the Ferris wheel, the CityStage LED screens and the welcome arch to the Makers Marketplace, the VIP areas, the lineup launch party, the Not Your Average Folk contest, volunteer shirts, cocktail cups and after-parties. Top partners get activation space up to 10 by 30 feet, and three-year commitments earn a discount.
