About this listing
Overview The North Carolina Mountain State Fair is Western North Carolina's 10-day agricultural fair at the WNC Agricultural Center in Fletcher, starting the Friday after Labor Day, and 41% of its visitors have been to 10 or more of them. The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services created it and opened the gates on Sept. 5, 1994, for a five-day fair in McGough Arena with the carnival in the parking lot; more than 45,000 people came that first year. The 2025 edition was the 31st. On site In 2025 the Ag South Farm Credit Mountain Music stage ran mountain music and clogging every night. More than two dozen craftspeople work in the Virginia Boone Center, and the Got to Be NC Pavilion lets fairgoers sample and buy from nearly 40 North Carolina food and drink makers. Drew Expositions brought the Midway. Free grounds acts in 2025 ran from the Red Trouser Show and Pompeyo's Amazing Dogs to racing pigs at Wild Bill's Speedway, and 27 local food trucks lined Got to Be NC Food Truck Alley. The competition catalog covers livestock, cooking, crafts, gospel singing and clogging, and it took 9,900 entries in 2025. Audience It is a family fair and a repeat one. In the fair's 2025 survey 78% of visitors came with children, 98% stayed more than two hours and 90% planned to return. Nearly all of them bought from food vendors, and 62% shopped the non-food vendors as well. The crowd comes from North Carolina, east Tennessee and upstate South Carolina, and from both town and country. Track record Attendance grew from that first 45,000 to 161,059 in 2025, up 7.89% on 2024, and competition entries rose 15% the same year. The 2025 marketing put billboards in front of more than 949,000 people in underserved rural areas. The Asheville Citizen-Times covers the fair's food vendor award winners each year. The 2020 fair was canceled, and Hurricane Floyd cost it a single day in 1999. Brand presence Partners attach their names to the fair's stages, days and spaces. In 2025 Sheetz presented the two Student Days, Ingles presented We CAN Fight Hunger Day, when five canned goods bought admission and MANNA FoodBank took the donations, and Fields Auto Group presented Salute to Service Day for military and first responders. The fair's sponsorship office builds packages from on-site activations, named spaces, community days, digital branding and signage.
