About this listing
Overview The North Carolina State Fair fills the state fairgrounds in Raleigh for 11 days every October, and it is a fair built on competitions: more than 28,000 entries in 2025, from needlework, canning and giant pumpkins to junior livestock. The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services runs it. The State Agricultural Society held the first fair in 1853, it moved to the present site in 1928, and the grounds grew to 344 acres in 1978. On site Past the Midway rides, the State Fair Flyer, the first permanent ride on the fairgrounds, and the SkyGazer Ferris wheel, more than 155 feet tall, rise over Dorton Arena, the 1952 livestock pavilion built with the world's first column-free roof and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2021 the Got to Be NC Ag Pavilion moved into the arena, with a cooking stage and local producers selling their own goods. Heritage Circle keeps an old tobacco barn curing through the fair, the N.C. Public House pours North Carolina beer and wine, and the N.C. Stillhouse added state distilleries in 2024. The Village of Yesteryear opened in 1950, and Cary United Methodist Church served its first ham biscuit on the grounds in 1916. Audience In the fair's own survey the top reasons to come are fair food, family tradition, free entertainment, the Midway and seeing agriculture up close, in that order. Most fairgoers live within 100 miles, about two-thirds stay up to six hours, and one in five plans to come back on more than one day. Online tickets sold into every one of North Carolina's 100 counties in 2025, and to buyers from all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico. Track record The fair set its attendance record of 1,091,887 in 2010 and drew 998,926 in 2024, the sixth-largest total in its history, with a Tuesday record of 85,738 on Senior Day. The 2024 Hunger Relief Day collected 254,000 meals, which went to MANNA FoodBank in Asheville after Hurricane Helene flooded its warehouse. The 2023 Junior Livestock Sale of Champions drew a record $217,850 in bids. Digital ads drove 745,000 click-throughs in 2025. Brand presence Partners name the pieces of the fair: music stages, educational exhibits, competitions, buildings, rides, whole days and the fireworks. Agri Supply signed a 10-year deal in 2022 to name the Agri Supply Exposition Center, and Smithfield Foods presented the 2024 Hunger Relief Day. The 2025 Home Chef Challenge ran as a string of presented contests: a street taco challenge from Sheetz, a smoked turkey breast challenge from Kindled Provisions, a quiche challenge from Wegmans and Pig on a Stick from Smithfield Foods. Discounted ticket offers ride on the fair's print-at-home tickets, which sold more than 300,000 admissions in 2025.
