About this listing
Overview The Biamp Portland Jazz Festival is a ten-day jazz festival spread across Portland, Oregon each March. About 50 concerts run in roughly 26 venues, from the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall to basement clubs, old churches and hotel lobbies, and nearly half are free. PDX Jazz, the nonprofit that is the largest presenter of jazz and jazz education in the Pacific Northwest, produces it. NEA Jazz Masters and GRAMMY winners share the program with Portland players. On site Ticketed headline concerts fill the Schnitz, Revolution Hall, the Aladdin Theater, the Alberta Rose Theatre, Mississippi Studios and The Old Church, and 12 of them sold out last time. Between those nights, free sets play in partner hotel bars and lobbies, a brewery taproom, a book pub and Director Park. The program also carries artist conversations, masterclasses and an all-ages student jam. Concert sponsors are thanked from the stage. Top-tier partners staff a marketing table at the headline shows. Audience Listeners pack the seated theaters for the headliners. At the club shows they crowd the rail, film on their phones and dance through the late sets. Many are PDX Jazz members, who get presale access and member discounts on festival tickets. Talent and Influencers St. Vincent headlined the most recent festival at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, with Mavis Staples, Madeleine Peyroux, the Bill Frisell Trio, MonoNeon with Mohini Dey, Tigran Hamasyan and Cyrus Chestnut. The year before, Erykah Badu played the festival's first arena show at the Moda Center, and Terence Blanchard, Christian McBride and Terri Lyne Carrington were on the bill. Earlier stages hosted Pharoah Sanders, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Dianne Reeves and Esperanza Spalding. The next lineup has not been announced. Track record The festival began as a three-day run of shows in downtown hotels. It now draws about 15,000 people over ten days, and PDX Jazz membership grew 30 percent during the latest season. Advertising across KOIN 6 TV, radio, print and digital totaled more than 300 million impressions last season, with KOIN alone airing 423 spots. Brand presence Biamp, the Beaverton audio company, is the title sponsor and has held the name for more than a decade. Partners come in at three levels. The top tier is category exclusive and gets a full-page program ad, its logo in the weekly e-newsletter and in the festival's print advertising, and a marketing table at headline shows. Major partners each sponsor one headline concert. Supporting partners get official partner status, tickets and logo placement in the program and on pdxjazz.org. Eleven hotels host free shows and offer festival rates.
