About this listing
Overview Rodeo de Santa Fe is a four-night professional rodeo held each June on the south side of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is sanctioned by the PRCA and counts toward the Turquoise Circuit, which covers New Mexico and Arizona, so contestants are chasing circuit standings and a shot at the National Finals Rodeo. Every night is a full performance. A volunteer nonprofit, Rodeo de Santa Fe, Inc., runs it and ranks it among the top 60 PRCA rodeos in the country. On site Gates open at 5 pm at the arena on Rodeo Road. Kids ride sheep in the Mutton Bustin' at 6:30, and every rider goes home with a belt buckle. The Grand Entry follows at 7, then bareback, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, breakaway, saddle bronc, team roping, barrel racing and bull riding, with youth barrel racers, the royalty, a specialty act and a barrelman in between. Replays run on the Jumbotron. Beer and wine are sold in every seating area, from box seats to the covered grandstand, and a VIP area has reserved tables. On the Saturday morning the Exceptional Rodeo gives children and adults with disabilities a bucking barrel, hay bales to rope and stick horse races. Audience Families from Santa Fe and northern New Mexico fill the stands, and many come back every year. Recent editions ran a family night, with a free child ticket alongside a paid adult, and a night when military members and first responders got in free. Weekend nights have sold out and gone standing-room-only. Talent and Influencers Nearly 500 contestants enter, world champions among them. At the most recent edition James Horcasitas, who has called rodeos for more than two decades, was on the microphone, and two-time NFR specialty act Haley Proctor performed. Cody Sosebee worked the barrel and Seth Wilson and Cauy Kraut fought bulls, with Andrews Rodeo Company of Addielou, Texas supplying the stock. A queen, princess and sweetheart are crowned before each rodeo and represent it at city events for the year. Next year's acts are not announced yet. Track record The rodeo started in a clapboard arena and within five years was drawing 15,000 people over its run of nights. It has now run for more than 75 years, and the New Mexico Senate passed a memorial honouring it. A volunteer board still runs it, with Jim Butler, grandson of one of the founders, as president. Brand presence Partner banners line Rodeo Road through June and hang on the arena fence and chutes. The announcer names the chute partner each time that gate swings open, and rough stock partners are named when their bronc or bull comes out. Partner flags ride in the Grand Entry, logos run on the Jumbotron and the Official Rodeo Program carries partner ads. Justin Boots presents the Mutton Bustin'. Royalty partners' logos go on the queens' jackets and trailers. The partner wall is mostly Santa Fe businesses, and the rodeo builds custom packages.
