About this listing
Overview Shamrock Run Fest is a St. Patrick's weekend road race in Portland, produced by Motiv Sports and billed as the largest running and walking event in Oregon. One race morning carries a half marathon, the Shamrock Showdown 8K, a 5K, the Shamrock Stride walk and the Doernbecher Leprechaun Lap for children 10 and under. Every distance starts on SW Naito Parkway at Pine Street and finishes at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, with bib pickup at a two-day Fitness Fair in the Oregon Convention Center. On site Runners self-seed into pace corrals on Naito Parkway and go off in waves, the half marathon first thing in the morning and the 5K just before midday. The half climbs Terwilliger Boulevard. The 8K stays flat. Behind the finish, Waterfront Park becomes the Finish Line Festival: a beer garden that pours a free drink for every runner 21 and over, a main stage of local bands and a Teams Village of tents for the biggest run clubs and company crews. The top 8K finishers win their weight in beer, stacked on a seesaw in front of the crowd. The Fitness Fair runs exhibitor booths, contests and giveaways, and the day ends at the Kells Irish after-party. Audience The field mixes chip-timed racers with walkers, families and people in green tutus, beanies and costumes, and the Stride walk is known for its dress-up. Run clubs, corporate groups and groups of friends register as teams, with perks that grow from mailed bibs to a reserved tent with the team's name. Many half marathoners use the race as a tune-up for a spring marathon. Talent and Influencers The 8K draws Portland's training groups, including Bowerman Track Club, Rose City Track Club and Jacuzzi Boys Athletic Club, and pays cash to its top three. A pace team leads half marathon groups at goal times from 1:40 to 3:00. Local acts such as the Katie Jane Band and Coming Up Threes have played the beer garden stage in past years. Performers for the next edition have not been announced. Track record The race calls itself Portland's longest running tradition and the city's oldest and largest running event. OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital has been its main beneficiary for close to three decades, and every Leprechaun Lap entry fee goes to the Friends of Doernbecher Grant Program. Charitable gifts across the event's history total more than $1.3 million. It now runs as the Shamrock Half Marathon Run Fest, with a rebuilt half course. Brand presence Toyota is the presenting sponsor and official automotive partner. Its name sits in the race title and on the start and finish arches, and registrants have been entered in a vehicle giveaway drawn live at the Fitness Fair. 2XU is the compression technology partner, Honey Stinger chews are handed out on the half marathon course, and Kells Irish Pub co-hosts the after-party and pours in the beer garden. Exhibitors take booths at the Fitness Fair, where every participant comes to pick up a bib.
