About this listing
Son of a Sailor Fest is a free, two-day celebration of Jimmy Buffett in his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, turning downtown into a day at the beach across Dauphin Street venues, the Saenger Theatre and an outdoor stage at Cedar Street Social. It started as a memorial second-line parade thrown together in a week after Buffett's death, which pulled thousands of Parrot Heads into the streets, and has since grown into a full-scale festival drawing nearly 2,000 fans. It is produced by the SouthSounds Music & Arts Festival, a 501(c)(3), with proceeds going to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Foundation and its marine research and coastal education work. The crowd is affluent and family-focused — average household income near $89,000, with 20% traveling at least 100 miles to get there — and it comes for a real Gulf Coast bill rather than a nostalgia act. The Friday night show at the Saenger has carried Mac McAnally, Buffett's longtime Coral Reefer Band collaborator, and Scotty Emerick, with Buffett tribute band Street Folks, W.B. Sims, Sara Bug, reggae outfit Vibe Irie, the Tanner Gray Band and the Blow House Brass Band leading the second-line parade through downtown. The festival now lands alongside the opening of the Jimmy Buffett Experience and a statue unveiling at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf, pulling Buffett fans from across the country into the city the same weekend. For a brand, the strongest position is naming the party itself — the outdoor "Jimmy's Backyard" stage or the VIP tent, where a sponsor's representative introduces acts and hands out contest prizes from the stage. A tent on the festival grounds puts beverage, sunscreen, boating, apparel and travel brands directly in front of a barefoot, tropical-shirt crowd with nowhere to be, and the second-line parade gives a sponsor the most photographed moment of the weekend. Off-site reach is real for an event this size: paid newspaper and radio buys have reached a combined audience of 140,000, with another 135,000 digital impressions behind the festival.
