Overview The Sunshine Health Orange Bowl Family Fun and Fit Day is a free Saturday morning at Carter Park in Fort Lauderdale where children pick up a backpack full of school supplies and a free haircut before the school year starts. It runs from 9 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday in August. The Orange Bowl stages it inside David Deal Playday, the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department's summer event, which reached its 71st year in 2025. The Orange Bowl Committee is a nonprofit created in 1935 to bring visitors to South Florida through its bowl game; 410-plus volunteer members and a staff of 30 run more than 50 events a year. On site The event is held on Orange Bowl Field at Carter Park, one of the committee's legacy park fields. Backpacks go out while supplies last, kids get free haircuts, and Farm Share hands out food. Health screenings, financial literacy information and a youth football clinic run alongside, and about 25 local vendors set up with products and services. For the kids there are bounce houses, games, water activities, face painting and caricature artists, with food trucks and a live DJ. Track record The 2025 edition was the 13th and the 2026 edition the 14th, both at Carter Park. The day is one of the community events under Orange Bowl Cares, the committee's community umbrella; the Orange Bowl and its partners had committed more than $50 million to South Florida over two decades by 2025, including more than $25 million for park renovations since 2009. Brand presence Sunshine Health holds the title and PNC Bank presents, and six associate sponsors joined them in 2026. An associate gets interactive exhibit space, an on-stage speaking slot, PA announcements, signage, recognition on the event's marketing materials and dedicated webpage, and the chance to donate branded school supplies for the backpack giveaway.
