About this listing
Overview The TD Five Boro Bike Tour closes 40 miles of New York City to cars for one Sunday in May and puts riders on the FDR Drive, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, on the way from lower Manhattan through all five boroughs to Staten Island. It is a ride, not a race. Bike New York, the nonprofit that grew out of it, produces the Tour and calls it the largest charitable bike ride in the United States; every registration carries a tax-deductible donation to the group's bike education programs. On site Riders leave Bowling Green in waves and cross into the Bronx on the Madison Avenue Bridge, into Queens over the Queensboro Bridge, into Brooklyn on the Pulaski Bridge and over the Verrazzano to Staten Island. Rest areas along the way carry snacks and entertainment, with extra water stops, free repair labor and support vehicles. The Finish Festival on Staten Island closes the ride, and riders get back to Manhattan on the free Staten Island Ferry or ride back. VIP riders get a limited-edition Primal Wear jersey, a timed climb over the Verrazzano and a lunch in the VIP and charity lounge at the finish. Audience Riders come from all 50 states and more than 60 countries, on road bikes, mountain bikes, tandems, recumbents and pedal-assist e-bikes; throttle e-bikes are not allowed. Registration covers adults and youth. Charity teams ride on fundraising minimums, and Bike New York members are guaranteed a place in the first wave. Track record The ride started on June 12, 1977 as the Five Boro Challenge, about 250 riders on an 80-mile course, organized by American Youth Hostels as bicycle safety training. Bike New York spun off as its own nonprofit in 1999. The Tour was canceled in 1991, when it had no sponsor, and in 2020 for COVID-19. Tour proceeds fund Bike New York's education programs, which taught cycling skills to more than 30,000 New Yorkers in 2020; in 2019 the group ran 12 education centers across the five boroughs. Brand presence TD Bank holds the title, and Manhattan Portage was presenting sponsor for 2027, with its bag in the VIP kit. Other partners on the Tour page include Primal Wear, iHeartRadio, Chobani, La Colombe, MarathonFoto and Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. Bike New York builds each partnership to order and can run it year-round across the Tour, its local and regional rides such as the Twin Lights Ride in New Jersey, and its education programs, with signage and activation on the route and at the finish, custom content, hospitality and employee perks.
