About this listing
Overview The Explorers Club is the New York society of field scientists and explorers whose members were first to both Poles, the summit of Everest, the deepest point of the ocean and the surface of the Moon. Some 3,500 members belong to it worldwide. Climate Week is the Club's own program during NYC Climate Week: six days of panels, symposia, film screenings and talks at its Upper East Side headquarters, with one themed program each day from Sunday through Friday. Every session is also livestreamed free on the Club's YouTube and Facebook channels. On site Most sessions run in the Clark Room, a wood-paneled hall under a vaulted plaster ceiling, its walls hung with flags carried on past expeditions. Programs usually start at 5pm and 7pm, with an afternoon slot on some days, and the evening talks open with a cocktail reception. Exhibits and art installations fill the building all week, from the members lounge to the terrace. On the last night members hand back Club flags they carried into the field, and the week ends with a party with food, music and climate cocktails. Audience Scientists, explorers, policymakers, investors, executives and activists who are in New York for Climate Week. They come to hear the panels and stay for the receptions, where most of the talking happens. Young members present their own fieldwork at a symposium for the Club's under-35 network, and school groups tour the climate exhibit during the week. Talent and Influencers Past programs brought Dame Jane Goodall in by satellite, alongside Michael Douglas, ocean explorer Sylvia Earle, author Bill McKibben, climate scientist Johan Rockström, conservationist Kris Tompkins, XPRIZE CEO Anousheh Ansari and Verizon chairman Hans Vestberg, with CNN's Bill Weir moderating. The latest week added Michael Mann, IKEA sustainability chief Karen Pflug and Fortune's Diane Brady. Speakers for the next program have not been announced. Track record The Club has run Climate Week alongside NYC Climate Week every year, and its sessions sell out. Partners use the week for news of their own. XPRIZE brought its Wildfire finalists here and announced the Wilkes Climate Innovation Prize winner live on stage, IUCN held a sold-out talk on investing in nature, and Doconomy has co-hosted a leadership panel two years running. Brand presence The Club President thanks sponsors from the stage, and a one-minute sponsor reel plays on monitors in the reception space. Sponsor logos appear on printed signage and on screen for the livestream. Sponsors can also place items in the Climate Week exhibit seen by guests and school groups. Guests of the sponsor can attend any session, get front-row seats at sold-out talks, go to private donor evenings and take a private tour of the headquarters with Club leadership. Some partners host a full session under their own name.
