Overview The Gate River Run is Jacksonville's 15K road race and the USA 15K Championship, and at mile 7 the course climbs the Hart Bridge, the Green Monster: 140 feet in half a mile, before a mostly downhill last mile to the finish at the Shipyards. More than 15,000 people finished the 15K in 2026. Around it run a 5K for Charity, the Junior River Run for kids, the Brooks Challenge Mile and a Diaper Dash. The race is on the PRRO Circuit, and Gate Petroleum holds the title under a long-term contract. On site Race week starts at the Runners' Expo, three days at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds where every runner has to collect a race packet. On race morning the 15K starts in four pace-based waves on Bay Street, runs through downtown and San Marco, crosses the Hart Bridge and comes back to the Shipyards; runners have to reach the bridge by 10:45, a 20-minute-mile pace. A jumbotron over the finish line shows the race live. Every 15K finisher gets a medal and a technical shirt, and the Post-Race Celebration at the Fairgrounds is where runners, families and friends gather between 8 a.m. and noon. WJXT TV4 carries a three-hour live broadcast. Audience A group of Streakers has run every Gate River Run since the first in 1978. The field runs from Olympians at the front to walkers in the last wave, and whole families come, with kids in the Junior River Run and the Diaper Dash. Talent and Influencers Bill Rodgers and Kim Merritt won the first race in 1978. Meb Keflezighi won it six times between 2001 and 2007, Shalane Flanagan won in 2014 and Emily Sisson three years running from 2021. Wesley Kiptoo (42:10) and Calli Hauger-Thackery (47:24) set the course records in 2025. In 2026 Mohammed El Youssfi of Morocco won in 43:26, and Belgium's Chloe Herbiet crossed the line first overall to take the $5,000 Equalizer, the bonus for the first runner home after the elite women's head start. Track record The 2026 race was the 49th. The first had 2,204 finishers; the 15K peaked at 16,357 in 2012, and more than 21,200 people ran across all the 2026 races. The 2026 elite purse was $77,000, including a $23,000 American Cup for the top U.S. finishers. In 2025 the expo drew more than 32,000 visitors and the race used over 1,000 volunteers, per the race's 2026 sponsorship summary. Brand presence Partners are sold by sub-event and level. The Runners' Expo and the Post-Race Celebration each carry a title partner whose name is on every reference to them - every TV, radio and print ad tells runners to pick up packets at the named expo. The team competition, added in 2024, can carry a title too. Major partners put logos on the back of more than 20,000 race shirts, on start, finish and expo banners, on WJXT's 150 promotional spots and in a 30-second commercial during the live broadcast, and get expo and post-race booths and inserts in every race packet.
