About this listing
Overview The United States Polo Association is the governing body of polo in the United States and owns the National Polo Center in Wellington, Florida. This series joins three high-goal championships, from late winter in Florida to late summer in California and Connecticut. The U.S. Open Polo Championship closes the winter Gauntlet of Polo at Wellington. The Silver Cup is played each summer at Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club and carries the oldest American polo trophy. The East Coast Open is a 20-goal championship at Greenwich Polo Club in Connecticut. On site At Wellington, featured matches are played on U.S. Polo Assn. Field One. Guests watch from the grandstand, VIP boxes, fieldside tailgate tents and the Pavilion, where Sunday brunch is served on a canopied veranda with a caviar and blini board. Finals end with the trophy presentation, MVP and Best Playing Pony awards, and a donation to a charity picked by each finalist. Santa Barbara Sundays open with a pony parade and a live anthem, and guests book fieldside cabanas and tent lounges facing the mountains. Greenwich spectators sit in pavilion boxes and along the fieldside lawn. Audience Sunday crowds at Greenwich come out from New York City and from Fairfield and Westchester counties. For the big Santa Barbara finals the stands fill with fascinators, white hats and sport coats. At every club, spectators leave their seats at halftime to stomp divots back into the field. Talent and Influencers The U.S. Open is played at 22 goals. Its recent fields have included 10-goal players Adolfo Cambiaso, Poroto Cambiaso, Hilario Ulloa, Tomas Panelo and Jeta and Barto Castagnola. Past U.S. Open winners include Pilot and La Dolfina, the side with which Adolfo Cambiaso won his tenth title. ESPN's Chris Fowler hosts the final's broadcast. More than 50 Polo Hall of Famers have won the Silver Cup, and Facundo Pieres, Mariano Aguerre and Nacho Figueras have played at Greenwich. Teams for the next season have not been announced. Track record Recent U.S. Open finals have been played in front of sold-out crowds at Wellington. The final airs on ESPN2 and abroad on TNT, Eurosport, Star Sports and beIN Sports, and the USPA Polo Network streams the Gauntlet and the Silver Cup semifinals and final. Santa Barbara is the third oldest USPA club still in existence. The East Coast Open started at Myopia Polo Club in Massachusetts before moving to Greenwich. Brand presence U.S. Polo Assn., the association's own apparel label, holds the naming rights to Field One at Wellington and is the official apparel brand at Santa Barbara and Greenwich. Whittier Trust is the Silver Cup's title sponsor, YETI presents the Sportsmanship Award at the U.S. Open final, and Icon Global is the network sponsor of the livestreams.
