About this listing
Overview The Vancouver Sun Run is a timed 10K road race through downtown Vancouver, held on a Sunday each April. The race calls itself Canada's largest 10K. A competitive wheelchair start and an elite race go off first, and the mass field follows in timed corrals at a run or a walk. Around the individual 10K sit a walking division, a 10K team division for workplaces, a youth team challenge, a 2.5K Mini Sun Run for families and a virtual run. A two-day expo opens race weekend. On site Corrals fill West Georgia Street at Burrard, where the band The Neurotics plays the start. The course heads out to Denman Street and the English Bay waterfront, runs east along Beach Avenue, crosses the Burrard Street Bridge and passes Science World before finishing beside BC Place Stadium. Bands and choirs play at more than a dozen points on the route. Finishers walk into BC Place for the wrap party, with live music, the awards ceremony, fruit, bagels and drinks. In the two days before the race, runners collect shirts and bibs at the expo in Vancouver Convention Centre East. Audience Most of the field are everyday runners and walkers: parents pushing strollers, school groups, seniors and office teams in shirts printed with the team name. Families bring younger children to the Mini Sun Run. Spectators line the seawall, Olympic Village and Science World and cheer the whole field through. Talent and Influencers An elite field races at the front for a prize purse, and the organizers pay flights and hotels for top Canadian athletes. Recent top finishers include Justin Kent, John Gay, Makenna Fitzgerald, Malindi Elmore and Natasha Wodak. Joseph Kimani's 27:31 course record still stands. Track record The first race drew about 3,200 runners, and the Sun Run has since passed one million finishers. Registrations since the pandemic pause: 35,612, 45,517, 50,794, then 57,518, the last with a cap in place. The race has raised more than $3.4 million for charities over its history. Brand presence The Vancouver Sun has been the title sponsor since the race began, and Herbaland Naturals is the presenting sponsor. Individual pieces of the event carry partner names, from the Mini Sun Run and the workplace team division to the youth team challenge and the volunteer crew. Exhibitors fill the expo hall for both days of package pick-up, and partners hand out product at the BC Place wrap party. A livestream of the race runs on YouTube and on the stadium's big screens.
